SMU and the European Union

The University has expanded its activities to form an institution of high academic and scientific standing both in Slovakia and internationally. The University encourages international cooperation and fosters relations with other European universities and scientific institutions.

SMU Membership in International Organizations:

  • As a forerunner of the University, the Slovak Postgraduate Academy of Medicine became a member of the Inter-Academy Medical Panel (IAMP).
  • On January 17th, 2003, the Council of the European University Association (EUA) admitted the SMU as a member of the EUA.
  • The SMU is a signatory of the Bologna Declaration. The Rector of the SMU signed the Declaration at the University of Bologna in September 2003, thus being the 21st European and 2nd Slovak university to do so, and in such a way guarantee to uphold academic rights and liberties.
  • The SMU is a member of the UEMS (European Union of Medical Specialists, Union Européenne des Médecins Spécialistes) since October 2003. It is an advisory body to the European Commission in Brussels in the area of education for specialized physicians.
  • The Faculty of Public Health of the SMU is a member of the Association of Schools of Public Health in the European Region (ASPHER).

SMU Cooperation with Foreign Universities and Institutions

  • Mobility


The SMU has signed the new European university charter – the Erasmus University Charter” – which is itself part of the Erasmus academic mobility project. It enables the University to finance the academic mobility of students, teachers, and administrative workers through the Slovak National Academic Agency (SAAI) from EU funds until 2012.

  • Cooperation Agreements


The SMU concluded a cooperation agreement with the Universitá Degli Studi di Palermo in March 2005. The agreement includes support in scientific projects, the mobility of scientific workers and young researchers, cooperation in study programmes, student mobility, teacher mobility, and the arrangement of shared study programmes.

In 2005, the SMU made an agreement with the P.L. Shupyk Medical Academy of Postgraduate Education in Kyjev to cooperate in academic matters, science, research, and lecturer exchange.

Since October 2006, the SMU is party to an agreement with the State Medical Academy in Astana, Kazakhstan, on scientific cooperation and academic exchange of students and lecturers.

The SMU has a cooperation agreement with the Southern Kazakhstan Medical Academy and the Kazakh National Medical University since June 2006.

In December 2006, the SMU concluded a cooperation agreement with the Emfasis Foundation Centre for Higher Diplomas in Thessaloniki, Greece, on providing specialized higher education at the SMU for international students.

The SMU restored the Socrates Higher Education (Erasmus) bilateral agreement with the Universitá Degli Studi di Napoli in Italy, enabling student and teacher exchange.

The SMU concluded a cooperation agreement with the Ternopil State Medical University in Ukraine on June 25th, 2003.

Since March 2009, the SMU has concluded cooperation agreements and memoranda with three universities in the People’s Republic of China, with the Chinese Academy for Chinese Medical Arts, the University of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Tianjin, and the Zhejiang Chinese Medical University in Hagzhou.
