Pregraduate study:

  • bachelor’s degree – first tier of higher education (undergraduate)
  • master’s degree – second tier of higher education (graduate)
  • doctoral study (combined first and second tier)

Bachelor’s degree – first tier
The bachelor’s degree study programme is the first tier of higher education. It is aimed at teaching theoretical and practical knowledge of modern science or art, and to provide graduates with the means of applying this knowledge in a graduate’s career, or in continuing higher education. Undergraduate study graduates earn a bachelor’s degree, the first tier of their higher education. Graduation involves the composition of a bachelor’s thesis. Graduates receive the academic title “Bachelor” (abbreviated to “Bc.”). The standard period of study in a bachelor’s degree programme at the Slovak Medical University in Bratislava is three years. 

Master’s degree and Doctor’s degree – second tier
The second tier (graduate) study programme focuses on teaching theoretical and practical knowledge of modern science and its creative application in a graduate’s career or in further postgraduate higher education. Graduates of master’s degree programmes and doctoral study programmes attain a degree in the second tier of higher education. Graduation involves the composition of a master’s thesis.

Master’s degree graduates receive the academic title “Master” (abbreviated to “Mgr.”). The standard period of study in a master’s degree programme at the Slovak Medical University in Bratislava is two years.

Graduates of doctoral study in human medicine receive the academic title “Doctor of General Medicine” (abbreviated to “MUDr.”). The standard period of study in a doctoral programme at the Slovak Medical University in Bratislava is six years.
